Digitoxin should not be taken only when a patient feels bad because it is a pill that patients should take as often as their doctors tell them to do so. Patients are usually asked to take this pill once per day, at the same time each day. It is usually taken with food or milk so that patients can avoid stomach irritation. Patients must take the medicine at the same time everyday, unless their doctor tells them otherwise. Some conditions in the body can become worst if patients suddenly stop taking the drug. If a patient misses a dose, he or she should take it within 12 hours. If the dose is taken after the 12 hours, the missed dose should be skipped and the patient should go back to the normal schedule. One should never double-up on a dose to make up for a skipped dose as excessive amounts of digitoxin can be harmful.
Too much of a good thing can definitely be a bad thing! As with most drugs, taking excessive amounts of digitoxin can lead to some decidedly bad side effects. Symptoms of digitoxin overdose include intense nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, loss of appetite, blurry or hazy vision, seeing halos around certain things, skin rashes, uneven heartbeats (arrhythmias), and a
feeling of dizziness. Digitoxin can also induce a loss of appetite, and thus it is used by many anorexics in order to combat their hunger.
Class 1 recalls have been issued on various digoxin drugs since the Digitek recall in 2008. Reason for the recall was that the drug posed health risks: patients would display symptoms of digitalis toxicity, especially nausea and vomiting. Some of the cases resulted in death.
